in Laredo, Texas, is a place of laughter, life and love. Under
the direction of Sr. Carmel Rangel, OSU, and with much assistance
from Sr. Karen Schwane, OSU, the center—now entering
its third year of operation—has become a second home
to many Laredo seniors.

Hope in Our Community
Growing up, Adorer of the Blood of
Christ Sister Hang Pham came to realize that she wanted
“to work with people who had been deprived so
that they can live fully as the person that God created
them to be.” The Vietnamese native wanted to serve
the poor, particularly women, to help empower them to
reach their full dignity and potential as a person created
and loved by God. She also knew she “wanted to
be involved with the Vietnamese community one way or
another.”

the “stranger” they met on the road to
Emmaus are read every Easter season. I seldom stop
to think about the facts that the disciples had lost
hope and that Jesus appeared to them in order to restore
their hope.

shoes—is the highlight of their week. She is their
image of hope in the midst of darkness.

People who call or come to the Hi-Pointe
Center in St. Louis don’t often know they are
greeted by a woman religious, and that’s OK with
Loretto Sister Angela Murphy. “I’m not there
to preach,” she said, “but to try to help
people’s needs to be met.” She is content
to let her actions do the talking.
